Super Chunky Crochet Sweater Tutorial (Half Double Crochet Slip Stitch)

Super Chunky Crochet Sweater Tutorial (Half Double Crochet Slip Stitch)

If you love cozy, modern crochet and projects that look impressive without being complicated, this one’s for you.

In this tutorial, I’m sharing how to crochet a super chunky sweater (jumper) using one of my favourite textured stitches: the half double crochet slip stitch. It creates a dense, beautiful fabric that feels really luxe, while still being surprisingly beginner-friendly.

This is the kind of sweater you’ll want to throw on again and again — comfy, warm, and effortlessly handmade.

A Simple Crochet Sweater Made From Panels

This sweater is constructed using simple flat panels, which makes it much less intimidating if you’re new to crocheting garments.

You’ll crochet:

  • One front panel
  • One back panel
  • Sleeves worked directly from the body

Once the panels are complete, the sweater is assembled with straightforward seaming, then finished with neat details at the cuffs, waistband, and collar.

If you’ve ever wanted to try a crochet jumper but weren’t sure where to start, this is a really lovely entry point.

The Star Stitch: Half Double Crochet Slip Stitch

The main fabric of this sweater uses the half double crochet slip stitch, which gives a subtle ribbed texture and a beautifully chunky feel.

It’s:

  • Textured without being bulky
  • Soft and structured
  • Perfect for super chunky yarn

To finish the sweater, I use linked double crochet for the cuffs, waistband, and collar, which adds a clean, polished edge and helps the garment sit nicely when worn.

What You’ll Learn in the Tutorial

In the video, I’ll walk you through:

  • How to work the half double crochet slip stitch
  • Crocheting the front and back panels
  • Sewing the shoulders neatly
  • Adding and shaping the sleeves
  • Laying the sweater flat for easy seaming
  • Finishing with cuffs, waistband, and collar

Everything is shown step by step, with plenty of time to follow along at your own pace.

Materials Used

For this sweater, I used:

  • Super chunky yarn (Paintbox Yarns Wool Blend Super Chunky)
  • A 10mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

You can find links to the exact materials I used in the video description, along with some good alternatives if you want to substitute yarn or hooks.

UK Terms (With Easy US Conversion)

The tutorial is worked in UK crochet terms, but the stitches are easy to convert if you use US terms — especially if you’re already familiar with half double crochet–style stitches.

A Cozy Make You’ll Actually Wear

This sweater is all about comfort, texture, and simplicity. It’s not fussy, it doesn’t require complicated shaping, and it’s designed to be something you genuinely enjoy making and wearing.

If you try this jumper, I’d absolutely love to see it — tag me on Instagram or leave a comment on the video to let me know how you got on.

Happy crocheting 🤍
