Learn to Crochet the Perfect Summer Cardigan with My New Skillshare Class!
Share
I'm so excited to share something I've been working on... my brand new Skillshare class teaching you how to crochet a lightweight mesh cotton cardigan that you'll actually want to wear!
If you've been following along on YouTube, you might have already seen this cardigan pattern. But I wanted to create something more structured and comprehensive for those of you who love having everything organised into clear, focused lessons. This Skillshare class breaks down the entire process into seven easy-to-follow lessons that you can work through at your own pace.

Why I Love This Cardigan (And Why You Will Too!)
This has quickly become one of my favourite designs, and here's why:
It's surprisingly simple. The entire cardigan is built on a two-row repeat using basic stitches you already know. If you can chain, single crochet, and double crochet, you're ready to make this!
It works up faster than you'd think. Because we're using a mesh stitch with larger spaces, you'll see progress quickly. No spending months on a single projectโthis is totally achievable for those of us with limited crafting time.
The cotton makes it perfect for summer. Unlike wool cardigans that are too warm for warmer weather, this breathable cotton mesh is ideal for layering over dresses, tank tops, or even wearing to the beach over your swimsuit.
You'll learn real garment construction skills. This isn't just following stepsโyou're learning how to shape necklines, taper sleeves, create professional button bands, and finish garments in a way that looks polished and store-bought.
What You'll Learn in the Skillshare Class
The class is divided into seven focused lessons (about 30 minutes total):
- Introduction - Overview of the project and materials
- Crocheting the Back Panel - Creating the structured waistband and mastering the mesh stitch
- Creating the Front Panels - Shaping the neckline and making mirrored pieces
- Making the Sleeves - Working in the round and tapering for that perfect fit
- Finishing with Tunisian Crochet Cuffs - Adding polished details (no special hook needed!)
- Assembling - Sewing the Sides - Invisible seaming with the mattress stitch
- Button Band and Collar - Creating buttonholes and adding the final touches
Each lesson focuses on specific techniques so you can work through them one at a time, pause when you need to, and really master each skill before moving on.
Who This Class Is For
This class is perfect for confident beginners to intermediate crocheters. You should be comfortable with basic stitches, but you don't need any experience making garments. I'll teach you everything you need to know about construction, shaping, and finishing.
If you've been wanting to try making wearable crochet but felt intimidated, this is the perfect project to start with. It looks impressive but uses straightforward techniques throughout.
What You'll Need
The Pattern
First, you'll want to grab the pattern! It's available in two places:
- Get it from my website - I always recommend shopping here first as it supports my small business directly
- Find it on Etsy - If you prefer shopping through Etsy
The pattern includes complete written instructions, sizing information, and helpful diagrams to guide you through the process.
Materials & Tools
Here's everything you'll need to create your own cardigan:
Yarn: I used Yarn & Colors Epic in the colour Ecru for mineโit's a beautiful 100% cotton worsted weight yarn that has the most lovely drape and softness. You'll need 12 balls total (approximately 1,200 yards).
- Get Yarn & Colors Epic from LoveCrafts - They have a great color selection and often run sales
Don't have access to this specific yarn? Any worsted weight cotton or cotton-blend will work beautifully. Look for something with good stitch definition that's soft against the skin.
Crochet Hooks: You'll need both a 4mm (US G-6) and 5mm (US H-8) hook for this project.
- Crochet Hooks on Amazon - I recommend getting a comfortable ergonomic set if you don't already have these sizes
Notions:
- Yarn needle for seaming
- Stitch markers (so helpful for keeping track!)
- 5 black buttons, 10mm diameter - Get buttons on Amazon
- Scissors and measuring tape
I've included links to all my recommended materials in the Skillshare class resources section, so you can easily find everything you need in one place.

There's something so satisfying about wearing a garment you made yourselfโespecially when people compliment it and you get to say "I made it!" This cardigan is one of those pieces that looks intricate and impressive but is genuinely achievable.
I've designed this class to give you the skills and confidence to not just follow along, but to really understand why we're doing each step. That way, you can apply these techniques to other garment projects in the future.
